ownCloud will be shut down on December 31, 2026: “Files” is available as the successor solution in the Academic Cloud
As previously announced, the existing ownCloud services owncloud.gwdg.de and sync.academiccloud.de will be shut down on December 31, 2026. After that, only the new, Nextcloud-based sync-and-share service Files will be available via the Academic Cloud at files.academiccloud.de.
We would like to remind you once again to complete the migration or data backup well in advance of December 31, 2026, so that you can continue to access your data even after the shutdown.
What’s next?
If your institution offers “Files,” you can migrate your data there. To find out if you have access to the service, log in and check the Academic Cloud service overview. If the “Files” tile with the “Go to Tool” button is displayed there, you can use the service.
If “Files” is not available to you, download your data from ownCloud in a timely manner and back it up elsewhere.
Important Notes on Migration
- Clean up beforehand: Delete files you no longer need to reduce the migration effort and minimize the risk of errors.
- Avoid making changes during migration: Do not make any changes to your files via the cloud from the start of the migration until you receive confirmation that it has been successfully completed. During this period, you should make changes exclusively on your local device.
Further Information
Instructions for migrating with the migration tool, for manual transfer, and for data backup can be found in our [documentation for the “Files” service] (https://docs.gwdg.de/doku.php?id=de:services:storage_services:nextcloud:start).
